The Barney’s business printing Australia success story begins thirty years ago when as a child, Garry Barnett, the now director of Barney’s Print Management, developed a passion for stickers. He devised a letterhead, Garry’s Sticker Collection and sent out hundreds of letters to companies such as radio stations and football clubs and businesses asking for stickers. He built up a huge collection of thousands of stickers.
As a young lad of six or seven, he spent part of his school holidays with his father who was a salesman who supplied imported food to supermarkets. His father took pride in this job and Garry watched as his father carefully lined up the labels on the cucumbers, for example, to make a beautiful presentation for the customer.
His father asked Garry what he wanted to be and Garry said he wanted to be just like his Dad. His father told him he needed to be better than that and should go to university to get a good education. That’s what Garry did, graduating with a business degree with a focus on marketing.
He then spent the next twelve years working for large Australian and international businesses. It was a tough environment and he grew up very quickly. He began working in the marketing departments of large corporates where there is no structure or organization and as you’re buying and producing millions of dollars worth of print, you need to keep a handle on expenditure, right down to the last business card or envelope.
Then came the unexpected blow of being made redundant. After having worked on a production line for low pay just to keep food on the table, as he had to support a wife and soon to be born baby, he was offered a short term contract with a corporate. Garry could see where some savings on print buying could be made if things were organized differently through business printing solutions. Through this experience he gained his first client, someone he still services today.
Barney’s is very much a family business, with Garry’s father Merv working in the business as well as his wife being an integral part.
There is one problem in corporate marketing, being let down by suppliers. There is always an excuse, but Barney’s ensures that your job is always completed on time, no matter what. No excuses are made, they just ensure that whatever the problem is, it is fixed. Garry decided to call his business Barney’s as his surname is Barnett and his nickname is Barney. He felt that Barney’s had a nice ring to it, and the name has served him well.
The business actually began in a back bedroom, then spread to his single car garage with five people working in it. He then moved to a professional corporate space with a warehouse with a facility for forklifts where he is today. That first client was a major corporate and he now has small, medium and large international clients. The American company which invented the pacemaker, Medtronic, Costco, the supermarket chain and the Australian Red Cross are three of his large clients.
Garry learned long ago that it is important to keep in mind that the customer is always right. He has tried to keep that firmly in place all that time, and with this philosophy, has built Barney’s business printing Australia up to what it is today.
